Appreciation Day 2008

As a gesture of thanks to the Australian community, the Sudanese Lost Boys Association of Australia (SLBAA) is holding an Appreciation Day on the 25 October, culminating in a free concert at Collingwood Town Hall. A forum will also be held the following day to discuss issues of importance to the Sudanese community.

The day aims to give the Sudanese community from across Australia a chance to express their appreciation for the opportunities and support provided by the Australian community, as well as showcasing Sudanese culture through food, dance and music.

Members of the Lost Boys Association will be volunteering their services at the Collingwood Children’s farm to help with gardening and general maintenance and also collecting money for the Red Cross at South Melbourne.

Other activities will include SLBAA members visiting1 Thomson street Abbotsford And spending the morning cooking lunch for the disadvantaged communities, as well as visiting juvenile detention centres, such as on Park street Parkville and playing soccer with the young detainees. If you would like to volunteer with Sudanese then, there will be a workshop on the 11th of October 1:00pm 67 Brunswick Street for the people who will volunteer on the 25th of October.

The highlight of the day is the Appreciation Day Celebration concert on Saturday night at the Collingwood Town Hall, which will include traditional Sudanese dance, music, hip hop and Sudanese food. Distinguished guests at the Appreciation Day Celebration include representatives from federal, state and local government, as well as community and business leaders.

Additionally, a forum will be held at the Supper Room at the Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday 26 October. Panellists will include university vice chancellors, the Federal Minister for Immigration, Chris Evans, state government representatives and members of the SLBAA.

The forum is a platform to engage government and community leaders on issues concerning the Australian Sudanese community – particularly refugee settlement, social inclusion and Australia’s engagement with events in Sudan.

Representatives of the Sudanese community from across Australia will be in Melbourne for the weekend of Appreciation Day – creating an important opportunity for engagement between the Government and Sudanese youth.
